Do you own a swimming pool? Spend half your money on pool supplies? Have you ever considered it? Well, much like buying your kids a puppy you never really know for sure what the hell you’re getting yourself into until it’s in the house crapping on the rug. I bought myself a pool last year and started cataloging the amount of time I spent working on the thing in the last year. Here you go, in case you’re wondering - activity first, hours spent second:
Drain, acid wash, refill, and rebalance chemistry (pool) 10
Drain, acid wash, refill, and rebalance chemistry (spa) 4
Replace diving board, rail, ladder, or slide (on existing mount) 3
Cut floating pool cover to size, install on roller straps 2
Rebuild three-port valve 1
Replace (or replace a component in) a time clock 1
Replace an underwater light bulb 1.5
Replace an underwater light fixture 2
Replace an air blower 1.5
Filters
Remove/Clean filter (cartridge or DE) 1.5
Open sand filter, breakup/clean sand 2
Remove sand filter, change sand 4
Install new filter (remove and dispose of old unit) 4
Pumps and Motors
Replace seal, seal plate, gasket, or other nonplumbed pump components 2
Replace volute, strainer pot, or other plumbed component 2
Replace motor (including electrical) 2.5
Heaters
Replace heater 8
Replace flange gaskets or thermostatic mixing valve 1
Replace pilot assembly 2
Replace main gas valve or burner tray components 2
Replace mainfold headers, heat exchanger, or firebrick 3
Ream heat exchanger 4
